President Obama Signs Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 Into Law

First Lady Michelle Obama, Administration Officials and Let’s Move! Advocates Reaffirm Commitment to Raise a Healthier Generation of Kids

“Today is a great day for kids throughout our country as they will soon have healthier, and more nutritious food in their schools. As we continue to focus on the twin issues of childhood obesity and hunger, we will increase access to good, quality meals in school cafeterias so the nutritional needs of our youngsters are better met. The President and First Lady have advocated strongly for passing the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, and, this bill, along with the resources and the powers provided under it, are going to allow USDA to be much more effective and aggressive in responding to obesity and hunger challenges for America’s kids.”

- U.S. Secretary Of Agriculture Tom Vilsack

“The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act is a significant step forward in our effort to help America's children thrive and grow to be healthy adults. Thanks to the dedication of this Congress and First Lady Michelle Obama, more kids will have access to healthy, balanced, nutritious school lunches. By increasing the number of students eligible to enroll in school meal programs and improving the quality of food served, this legislation simultaneously tackles both hunger and the obesity levels currently affecting too many communities across this nation.”

-U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius

"The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act makes the most significant investment in the National School Lunch program in more than 30 years. I look forward to continuing to work with the First Lady and Secretary Vilsack to combat our national childhood obesity epidemic and increase students access to the nutritional food they need to help them learn.”

- U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan

“As Vice Chair of the Partnership for a Healthier America, I join President Obama and the First Lady in celebrating the signing of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act.  This bi-partisan legislation will significantly enhance the quality of food for our children for generations to come and is a dramatic step forward in reducing childhood obesity. As a physician, I know smart nutrition leads to healthy and productive lives. With 36.5% of our children in Tennessee being overweight, this act goes a long way in ensuring that kids in Tennessee and around the country will have the healthy nutrition they deserve.”

- U.S. Senator Bill Frist (R-TN)

“Childhood and adult obesity are national problems and growing epidemics, but the passage of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act will help end this epidemic by improving the quality of food served to our children in schools across the nation. Here in Newark, we are defeating childhood and adult obesity, by partnering with organizations and community leaders to create local-based change that empowers families, neighborhoods and youth to embrace a healthier lifestyle.  I applaud First Lady Michelle Obama’s commitment to the children of our city and across the country.”

-  Mayor Cory A. Booker of Newark, New Jersey

“On behalf of Mission: Readiness and over 100 retired generals and admirals who support child nutrition legislation as a matter of national security, we are very pleased that the nation has taken this important step in addressing the nation’s obesity epidemic. Being overweight or obese is the No. 1 medical reason why young men and women are unable to join the military. Research shows that up to 40 percent of what children consume every day takes place during school hours and that 80 percent of children who were overweight between the ages of 10 to 15 were obese by age 25. The final bill includes provisions that can get junk food out of schools, nourish more kids who need healthful meals and motivate them and their parents to adopt healthful eating and exercise habits.  Military concerns about the fitness of American children are not new. When the National School Lunch Act was first passed in 1946, it was seen as a matter of national security. At the time many military leaders recognized that poor nutrition was a significant factor reducing the pool of qualified candidates for service. Our country is facing another serious health crisis. Obesity rates threaten the overall health of America and the future strength of our military. We must act, as we did after World War II, to ensure that our children can one day defend our country, if need be.”

-Retired Army Generals John M. Shalikashvili and Hugh Shelton, Former Chairmen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff

“Congratulations to First Lady Michelle Obama, Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack and to the bi-partisan support in the Congress to pass the Healthy, Hunger Free Children Act.  By passing a bill that addresses the nutritional quality of school lunches, an important step is being taken to give children choices that will make them healthier and more productive.”

-Mike Huckabee, Governor of Arkansas 1996-2007

“The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act makes significant progress toward ending child hunger and obesity by expanding access to federal child nutrition programs and improving the nutritional value they provide. In addition to reauthorizing federal child nutrition programs, the act will help address childhood obesity by reducing the fat and calorie content of school meals. Reversing the childhood obesity epidemic in a single generation – as First Lady Michelle Obama has called upon our nation to do – won’t be easy. It will require a long-term, sustained commitment to attacking this issue across multiple fronts. The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act makes great strides toward eliminating this threat to our children's health.”

- O. Marion Burton, MD, FAAP, President, American Academy of Pediatrics

“The historic signing of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act helps schools become part of the solution to the childhood obesity epidemic. It is a victory for American parents working to make sure their kids grow up healthy, and for schools wanting to provide students with more nutritious meals and a healthier environment. With the implementation of this law, our nation's kids will be less likely to grow up with early risk factors for heart disease and stroke.”

-Nancy Brown, Chief Executive Officer, American Heart Association

“Today marks a major step forward in efforts to prevent both childhood obesity and hunger among our nation’s children. The signing of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act into law is a long-awaited victory for the 31 million students who participate in federal school meal programs. By giving the USDA the authority to update standards for all foods and beverages in schools, this new law says unhealthy foods have no place in our nation’s schools. And schools finally will have more resources to serve nutritious and appealing meals.”

- Risa Lavizzo-Mourey, M.D., M.B.A., President and CEO, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation

“Getting junk food out of schools has been ten years in the making. This bill is a historic step toward reducing childhood obesity and helping parents' feed their children better. It's the result of the hard work of many, but would not have passed without this Administration. The President's leadership and First Lady's tireless advocacy brought the child nutrition bill back to life a number of times as it made its way through Congress.”

-Margo G. Wootan, Director of Nutrition Policy, Center for Science in the Public Interest

“The School Nutrition Association joins families nationwide in thanking President Obama, the First Lady and Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack for their sustained efforts to pass child nutrition reauthorization and expand children’s access to healthy school meals.  The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act recognizes the importance of school meals to the health and academic success of America’s children and gives school nutrition programs critical resources to bring more fresh produce, whole grains and low-fat dairy products into cafeterias.  School nutrition professionals look forward to working with the Administration, parents, principals and community leaders to meet new nutrition standards for school meals and explore new avenues for promoting healthy lifestyles for our children.”

- Nancy Rice, M.Ed., RD, LD, SNS, President, School Nutrition Association (SNA)

“The provisions of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act will support efforts already underway in Dallas.  The additional funding will help with continuing to improve our school meals and creating a healthier school environment.  We appreciate the fact that child nutrition has been placed as a high priority by the First Lady and the President. New USDA meal patterns and professional standards will assure improved quality child nutrition programs for our children which in turn will support student academic performance in the classroom.”

-Dora Rivas, MS, RD, SNS, Executive Director, Food & Child Nutrition Services, Dallas Independent School District

“Our kids aren’t hungry because we lack food or because of a lack of food and nutrition programs. They are hungry because they lack access to programs that provide the nutritious food they need to grow and thrive. I would like to thank the President and First Lady for making Child Nutrition a top priority. Through their leadership and commitment we now have the first significant change in school meals in thirty years. This legislation is historic and will allow me to continue to offer more real foods to the kids in our schools.”

- Timothy Cipriano, Executive Director of Food Services, New Haven Public Schools

“The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act signals a deep commitment to our nation's children and provides increased access to the food and nutrition programs that often go underutilized. Our kids aren't hungry because we lack food or because of a lack of food and nutrition programs. They are hungry because they lack access to the nutritious food they need to grow and thrive.  The First Lady’s persistence made all the difference between this legislation’s good intentions and its becoming the law of the land.”

-Bill Shore, Founder and Executive Director, Share Our Strength

“This bill is an acknowledgement that in a nation as bountiful as ours, no child should worry about when their next meal will be. We are grateful for the hard work of our coalition partners, the White House, and Congress.”

-Rabbi Steve Gutow, President, Jewish Council for Public Affairs, Co-Chair Fighting Poverty with Faith

"This bill is an exciting victory for hungry children. After a largely gridlocked year, passage of this bill is a positive sign that Congress can work together in the best interests of Americans."

-Rev. Mark S. Hanson, Presiding Bishop, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

“This critical legislation ensures that more of our nation’s children have access to healthy nutritious food and reaffirms our commitment as a nation to addressing the problem of childhood hunger.  It is unacceptable that one in four children in poverty in America are hungry. The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 is an essential step in helping the 43.6 million American families who struggle every day to feed their children.”

- Father Larry Snyder, President, Catholic Charities USA, Co-chair Fighting Poverty with Faith

“Today's signing of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act is something to celebrate, whether you are one of the 31 million schoolchildren who stand to benefit from it, or their parents, or America’s farmers. The bill establishes sensible nutrition standards for the food sold in school that will help push the junk food out of the building and make it easier for kids to have access to a nutritious meal or snack in school.  The increase in funding for school lunch may be modest, yet it is also the first such increase in sixty years—a long-overdue recognition of the importance of the school lunch program in assuring the health of our children. The bill also recognizes the value of linking farms directly to schools as a way to get the freshest, tastiest vegetables and fruits into the cafeteria—a boon to both children and local farmers. The bill represents an important achievement for the First Lady’s Let’s Move! campaign, and the First Lady and her team are to be congratulated. It is also a victory for all the grass roots organizations and activists who work so hard to improve access to healthy food for everyone. There is still much to be done, but what has happened today marks a significant step forward, toward a food system that puts the health of our children first.”
–Michael Pollan, Author and Journalism Professor
“The way we feed our children today will dictate the country we have tomorrow. This was much more than a bipartisan effort. With the First Lady’s leadership, parents, teachers, child advocates and chefs all helped to pass a bill that will provide a children with what should be a fundamental right: the right to be fed in a healthy way. While I am happy we were able to squeeze a few more dollars for school lunch programs, I think we can do better. We need to band together on these issues to make sure we don’t shortchange our kids.”

- José Andrés, Principal, Think Food Group

“From the First Lady’s Chefs Move to Schools initiative to the President’s Childhood Nutrition bill, the Obama Administration has instigated a much-needed attitude change towards proper nutrition. As a chef and as a mother of four, I understand the importance of providing my own children with wholesome meals and firmly believe that all of our nation’s children should be afforded the same opportunity to grow up healthy which is why this legislation is so important.”

-Cat Cora, Founder, “Chefs for Humanity” and UNICEF spokesperson

“I am pleased to support President and Mrs. Obama and the efforts of their Administration in securing healthier nutrition for this nation's children. We still have much work to do to guarantee that all Americans have access to adequate, high-quality food, but the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act is an important first step in that direction."

Remarks by the First Lady at an event on access to healthy, affordable food

East Room

2:32 P.M. EDT

MRS. OBAMA:  Thank you.  Thank you, everyone.   Thanks so much.  Please, rest yourselves.  Good afternoon.

        AUDIENCE:  Good afternoon.

MRS. OBAMA:  Well, this is very cool.  (Laughter.)  I am thrilled to be here today.  And I want to start by thanking Josephine for that very kind introduction and for her wonderful remarks.  And I have to say, I have to out you, today is her birthday.  (Applause.)  So happy birthday.  She just turned 30 -- (laughter) -- and I think that she’s going to go out and party and hang out, go to some clubs.  (Laughter.)  So we hope this has been a good way to start your birthday.  We are thrilled to have you.

I also want to acknowledge the members of Congress who are with us today.  Thank you all for taking time to come and join us.  I want to thank Mayor Lozano for his leadership and his service.  There you are.  Thank you so much.  And I have to recognize my partner in crime, Jim Gavin.  I always know that when I see him, there’s good news ahead.  So we are happy to have him, as well as the Partnership for a Healthier America, for being here and for their role in helping to gather these commitments and ensuring our success going forward.  That partnership has been a tremendous part of “Let’s Move.”

And finally, I want to thank all of the businesses, all of the nonprofits, all the elected officials here.  I want to thank you for your passion.  I want to thank you for your conviction and for your dedication to our communities.

And going off-script just a bit, I would like all of the employees who have come here today -- because these businesses brought the stars of their show, the men and women who work in these stores -- would you all please stand?  (Applause.)  Good stuff.

So make no mistake about it:  This is a big deal.  It is a really big deal.  I think our Vice President put it better but I’m not going to use his words.  (Laughter.)  This is a really big deal.  (Laughter.)  The commitments that you all are making today have the potential to be a game-changer for our kids and for our communities all across this country.

See, when we started “Let’s Move” way back when we launched it, we made healthy food financing one of our four key pillars, and there’s a reason for that.  There’s a reason why we set a goal that every family in every community in America would have access to fresh, healthy, affordable food.  And we knew that goal was ambitious.  We knew that a lot of folks had been working on this problem for years, and few had been able to solve it.  And we knew the conventional wisdom on this issue –- that businesses won’t take the risk of investing in certain communities, that the costs are too high but the profits too low to make it worthwhile.

But we also knew that if we truly wanted to end the epidemic of childhood obesity, if we truly wanted all of our kids to have the chance to grow up healthy, then we didn’t have a choice.  We needed to confront this problem head on.  Because we can give people all of the information and advice in the world about healthy eating and exercise.  We can talk all we want about calorie counts and recipes and how to serve balanced meals.  But if parents can’t buy the food they need to prepare those meals, if their only options for groceries are in the corner gas station or the local minimart, then all that is just talk.  It’s all just talk, and that is not what “Let’s Move” is about.

“Let’s Move” is about giving parents real choices about the food their kids are eating.  And if a parent wants to pack a piece of fruit in a child’s lunch, if a parent wants to add some lettuce for a salad at dinner, they shouldn’t have to take three city buses, or pay some expensive taxi to go to another community to make that possible.

Instead, they should have fresh food retailers right in their communities -– places that sell healthy food at reasonable prices, so that they can feed their families in the way that they see fit, because when they have those choices, that can have a real, measurable impact on a family’s health, and we all know that.  Studies have shown that people who live in communities with greater access to supermarkets eat more fresh fruits and vegetables, and they have lower rates of obesity.

Now, we know this isn’t going to be easy -- nothing we do ever is.  We know that we can’t just throw money at this problem, especially not at this time.  And we know that it won’t be solved by government alone or by businesses alone or by communities alone.  If we want to make a difference in this issue, we all are going to have to step up -- all of us.  We all have to find a way to do our part.

Solving this problem is about people like Mayor Lozano and Representative Dwight Evans, who decided that no child should be consigned to a life of poor health because of the neighborhood that his or her family lives in.  So what did they do?  They started reaching out to businesses, helping folks set up shop in communities in their area.

It’s about organizations like the Food Trust, who have been studying this issue and creating models for how to solve it.  It’s about coalitions like the FreshWorks Fund, who have come together and pooled their resources and expertise, and they’ll be bringing small, family-owned grocery stores into underserved communities all across California.

And it’s, of course, about companies like Walgreens and Wal-Mart and SuperValu.  It’s about entrepreneurs like Greg Calhoun and Jeffrey Brown -- all of them are stepping up.  They decided to take that risk.  They decided to make that investment, because what they knew was how big that payoff could be.  Not just in terms of dollars, but in the lives of our children, the lives that we can save.

You see, they didn’t do this just as executives who care about their company’s bottom lines -- and I’ve met these people.  They did it as parents and as grandparents who care about the health of our kids.  They did it as leaders who care about our country’s future.  And I think that Jeff Brown put it best when he said, and these are his words, “We’re not going to be on the sidelines.”  He said, “We’re going to be right with our communities using what we’re good at:  solving problems through innovation and entrepreneurial thinking.”  And I have had the pleasure of seeing firsthand what happens when folks like Jeff put that innovation and entrepreneurial thinking into work in our communities.

Last year, I had the privilege of visiting Philly, a city where just seven years ago there were fewer supermarkets per person than almost anywhere in America.  But today, because of the dedicated efforts of elected officials and nonprofit organizations and businesses across the state of Pennsylvania, they have funded 88 supermarket projects in 34 counties, bringing nutritious food to more than 500,000 people in that state.  And they’re projecting to create or preserve more than 5,000 jobs, often in communities that need these jobs the most.

And I visited one of those stores during my time there, and I have to tell you from firsthand experience, the stores are thriving.  These are beautiful, bright, gleaming stores that would make any community proud.  And the people who work there and shop there were proud to be part of it.  They were proud to have that kind of store in their communities.  And they would turn in a good profit.

And we know that when these stores succeed they can serve as anchors in our communities, drawing customers from surrounding neighborhoods and communities, and creating jobs for people like Josie and so many others, and all the folks out there who are wanting to work in their communities.  And that, in turn, can attract other businesses to come and set up shop, which can mean even more customers and even more jobs.

So we know the impact that we can have here.  All of us understand how important this is on so many different fronts.  And that’s why as part of “Let’s Move,” we created a Healthy Food Financing Initiative to encourage efforts like those in Philadelphia to happen all across American.  We can do it there, we can do it everywhere.

And this administration is committing $35 million this year, and the 2012 budget proposes another $330 million for next year.  (Applause.)  And the plan is to use that money to leverage hundreds of millions more from the private and nonprofit sectors.

So I think it’s fair to say that we’ve got some big things happening here.  It’s pretty good.  Just listening backstage, I mean, I knew all the -- I knew the announcement.  They told me ahead of time.  (Laughter.)  But it was pretty impressive.   But these commitments we’re announcing today are still just the beginning.

We’ve got a lot of hard work ahead, long road, lot of work.  So I want to be clear that today isn’t just a celebration; it is also a call to action.  Still, the companies represented here today are only a tiny fraction of the total number of food retailers in this country.  And if they can step up and make these investments, then there is absolutely no reason why every food retailer in this country can’t find some way to get involved as well.  Right?  Can I get an amen or something?

        AUDIENCE:  Yes!

        MRS. OBAMA:  Yes.  (Applause.)

So whether you’re a small, local grocer like Jeff or Greg or a multinational corporation, everyone has a role to play.  And we want folks to be creative because there’s really no one-size-fits-all solution to this issue here.  Every community has different needs and challenges that call for different approaches.  A fresh food section in a Walgreens might be a good solution for one community, while a farmers market or maybe even a veggie truck might be the answer in another community.

At the end of the day, these are local decisions that need to be made by communities, for communities.  So we need folks to go out and talk to their community leaders, and that’s, again, not just a call to action to the business community, but to all Americans, particularly those living in areas that are underserved in this way.  Talk to community leaders.  Get connected with nonprofit organizations and foundations that are working on this issue.

We encourage people to go to our website, letsmove.gov.  There they can learn about other individuals and communities that are working to solve this problem and find ideas.

Because the truth is, is that if we work together and do this right, if we bring the kind of success that we’ve had in Philadelphia to other cities and other communities across this country, just think about the difference that we can make.

Think about the numbers of people who will find jobs.  Think about the neighborhoods that can potentially be transformed.  But more importantly, think about the impact that we can have on our children and their futures -- on their health, their well-being, their ability to succeed in school and more importantly in life.  Because that’s really what this is about in the end.  This is about our kids.

And together, with these commitments, we are happily taking the first important step forward to helping to create the kind of future that we want for all of our kids.

So I want to end today by saying how proud I am -- truly proud -- of what is happening here today.  I want to tell all of you how grateful I am to see you all stepping up and being leaders in this effort.  With your commitments today, you all are showing us what’s possible.  You’re showing us that we live in a country where we do care deeply about our kids.  We do.

And when people understand the threat of childhood obesity and what risk it poses to our children’s future, and when people realize that they can actually do something about it, that this isn’t some mysterious issue that we can’t address, we know the answer, it is right there, then people step up.

They do what we’ve always done for our children.  We take risks.  We make sacrifices so that our kids can have a better life than we had, so that they can have opportunities that we never dreamed of.

So in the end, that is what “Let’s Move” is all about.  That’s what these commitments represent.  And I look forward to working with all of you, doing more, getting more retailers on board, creating more jobs, getting more fresh fruit and vegetables into the hands of families all across this nation.  We are going to get this done.  We’re making some terrific progress, but we still have work to do.  And I look forward to working with all of you in the months and years ahead.

Thank you all so much.  (Applause.)

First Lady Michelle Obama Announced the Commitments to open or expand over 1,500 stores today

The following retailers commented on First Lady Michelle Obama’s announcement today of their commitments to provide access to healthy, affordable food to millions of people in underserved communities.

SUPERVALU – Committed to building 250 new stores

I am very proud that our company and our associates are committed to growing our Save-A-Lot business, helping to bring healthier food options to underserved communities throughout the country, and truly making a difference in lives of Americans everywhere.”

Walgreens – Committed to expanding their food offering to include whole fruits and vegetables, and other healthy options in approximately 1,000 stores
Walgreens President and CEO Greg Wasson: "With more than 45 percent of our stores located in areas that don't have access to fresh food, Walgreens is uniquely positioned to bring more food options to Americans and also provide needed pharmacy, health and wellness services directly in those communities. Joining with the Partnership for a Healthier America, se plan to convert or open at least 1,000 food oasis stores across the country over the next five years.”

Walmart – Committed to opening or expanding 275 to 300 stores
Leslie Dach, executive vice president of corporate affairs at Walmart: “By opening stores where customers need them most, Walmart will help build healthier families and stronger communities.  We believe every single person should have access to an abundant selection of fresh fruits and vegetables at an affordable price.  First Lady Michelle Obama is helping millions of Americans lead healthier lives, and Walmart is proud to partner with her in this work.  The First Lady’s leadership on products, prices and access to healthier food has helped sharpen our focus on bringing affordable groceries to underserved urban and rural areas.”

The more than a dozen partners who made it happen should be congratulated for their vision and collaboration.”

First Lady Michelle Obama Announces Nationwide Commitments to Provide Millions of People Access to Healthy, Affordable Food in Underserved Communities

SUPERVALU, Walgreens, Walmart and regional retailers among those making major commitments

First Lady Michelle Obama joined leaders from major retailers, foundations and small businesses today to announce commitments that will provide access to healthy, affordable food to millions of people in underserved communities. The commitments from SUPERVALU, Walgreens, Walmart and regional retailers will include opening or expanding over 1,500 stores to serve communities throughout the country that currently do not have access to fresh produce and other healthy foods. These stores estimate that they will create tens of thousands of jobs and serve approximately 9.5 million people in these communities throughout the country. Currently, 23.5 million Americans – including 6.5 million children – live in low-income areas that lack stores likely to sell affordable and healthy foods. Studies have shown that limited access to healthy food choices can lead to poor diets, higher levels of obesity and other diet-related diseases.

“The commitments we’re announcing today have the potential to be a game-changer for kids and communities all across this country,” said First Lady Michelle Obama. “We can give people all the information and advice in the world about healthy eating and exercise, but if parents can’t buy the food they need to prepare those meals because their only options for groceries are the gas station or the local minimart, then all that is just talk. Let’s Move is about giving parents real choices about the food their kids are eating, and today’s announcement means that more parents will have a fresh food retailer right in their community – a place that sells healthy food, at reasonable prices, so they can feed their families the way they want.”

Mrs. Obama has been leading a nationwide effort to combat childhood obesity so that children born today will reach adulthood at a healthy weight.  The Let’s Move! Campaign is a comprehensive, collaborative, and community-oriented initiative that has sought to engage every sector of society to tackle head-on the many different factors that lead to childhood obesity.  Today’s announcement is a historic step towards addressing that issue and achieving the primary goal of Let’s Move! – solving the problem of childhood obesity within a generation

The White House Task Force on Childhood Obesity Report to the President identified access to healthy, affordable food as key to solving childhood obesity.  In February 2010, Mrs. Obama traveled to Philadelphia where she announced the Healthy Food Financing Initiative, a multi-million dollar public and private investment to improve access to healthy food. The President’s 2012 Budget proposes funding for the multi-year initiative to increase the availability of affordable, healthy foods in underserved urban and rural communities. The Departments of Agriculture, Health and Human Services, and Treasury are proposing $330 million in financing to community development financial institutions, other nonprofits, public agencies, and businesses with sound strategies for addressing the healthy food needs of communities.

Partnership for a Healthier America secured the following commitments and will be working with the companies to evaluate and monitor their progress with these efforts. Decisions on store locations will be made with communities based on their needs.

The President and First Lady Honor Nelson Mandela on his 93rd Birthday

Ed. Note: In 2009, the United States joined the United Nations General Assembly in declaring July 18th Nelson Mandela International Day. Today, the global community honors Nelson Mandela through acts of service. You can find service opportunities in your community on Serve.gov.

"As the people of the world celebrate Nelson Mandela’s 93rd birthday on July 18, Madiba continues to be a beacon for the global community, and for all who work for democracy, justice and reconciliation," President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama said in a statement, "On behalf of the people of the United States, we congratulate Nelson Mandela, and honor his vision for a better world."

The President and First Lady continued:

Nelson Mandela said, ‘There is no passion to be found playing small - in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.’ A man who devoted 67 years of his life to public service, Madiba sets the standard for service worldwide, whether we are students, shopkeepers or farmers, cabinet ministers or presidents. He calls on us to serve our fellow human beings, and better our communities.

Statement by the President and Mrs. Obama on Nelson Mandela International Day

As the people of the world celebrate Nelson Mandela’s 93rd birthday on July 18, Madiba continues to be a beacon for the global community, and for all who work for democracy, justice and reconciliation. On behalf of the people of the United States, we congratulate Nelson Mandela, and honor his vision for a better world.

Michelle, and my daughters, Sasha and Malia, recently met Madiba during an official visit to South Africa that focused on service, youth leadership, education and healthy living. Their time with Madiba was the most moving part of their trip.  Mandela’s legacy exemplifies wisdom, strength and grace, and on the anniversary of his birth we salute the example of his life.

In 2009, the United States was honored to join 192 other United Nations member states in the creation of Nelson Mandela International Day. As the global community honors Madiba on July 18 through individual and collective acts of service, we honor the man who showed his own people, and the world, the path to justice, reconciliation and democracy.

Yesterday I was honored to accompany the First Lady to the celebration of life for former First Lady Betty Ford, at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church in Palm Desert, California.  An historic gathering of others who have shared the privilege of serving the country in the White House were also in attendance, including President George W. Bush, First Lady Nancy Reagan, First Lady Rosalynn Carter and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.  President and Mrs. Ford’s four children, Mike, Jack, Steve and Susan, and their children and grandchildren, were warm and welcoming, and embodied the joy and spirit of their parents, especially their mother who we all came to honor.  The trailblazing life of this remarkable woman was highlighted throughout the service.

Her son, Mike Ford, spoke of the love between his parents, and the love they showered on their family.  Mrs. Carter noted their longstanding friendship, which was forged out of the unique circumstances when President Carter defeated President Ford, and Mrs. Ford welcomed Mrs. Carter to the Carters’ new home in the White House.  Mrs. Ford and Mrs. Carter went to jointly champion the cause of health care coverage for mental illness and addiction, and Mrs. Carter hailed the progress that has been made on this important issue.  Geoffrey Mason of the Betty Ford Center spoke directly to Mrs. Ford, thanking her for saving his life and the lives of so many others who struggle with addiction.

Travels with the First Lady: A Remarkable Journey in Africa

Watch the video about the First Lady's Trip to Africa here.

As we set out for Africa we knew we were in for a remarkable journey. We knew we would visit historical and sacred sites, and meet with inspirational leaders. And while these events were truly extraordinary, the moments that defined the trip were those we shared with young people who are shaping their countries in Africa, and organizations that are working to strengthen communities. I want to highlight some of the amazing organizations we visited, and share some of the stories behind the events you saw unfold.
