In the morning, the President and the Vice President will receive the Presidential Daily Briefing in the Oval Office. This meeting is closed press.

In the afternoon, the President will host and deliver remarks at the SelectUSA Investment Summit. The President will discuss the importance of taking measures to grow the economy, encouraging the businesses and investors from around the world in attendance to bring new investment and jobs to the U.S.

Later in the afternoon, the President will meet with Senator-elect Cory Booker, who will have been sworn in as Senator of New Jersey at the U.S. Capitol by the Vice President earlier in the day. This meeting in the Oval Office is closed press.

In the evening, the President and the First Lady will welcome local children and children of military families to trick-or-treat at the South Portico of the White House.

Deficit More Than Cut in Half Since 2009

The Office of Management and Budget and the Department of the Treasury today released the fiscal year (FY) 2013 budget results, which show that we are continuing to make significant progress in reducing the deficit. The final 2013 deficit was $680 billion, $409 billion less than the 2012 deficit and $293 billion less than forecast in President Obama’s April Budget. As a percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the deficit fell to 4.1 percent, representing a reduction of more than half from the deficit that the Administration inherited when the President took office in 2009. The deficit reduction since that point represents the fastest decline in the deficit over a sustained period since the end of World War II.

Economic Activity During the Government Shutdown and Debt Limit Brinksmanship

A new report released today by the Council of Economic Advisers attempts to estimate the actual impact of the shutdown and default brinksmanship on economic activity and finds that a range of eight economic indicators are consistent with a 0.25 percentage point reduction in the annualized GDP growth rate in the fourth quarter and a reduction of about 120,000 private sector jobs in the first two weeks of October.

Ohio Medicaid Expansion Will Provide Health Coverage for 270,000 Previously Uninsured Residents

Later, the President will conduct interviews with three local television anchors at the White House about how the government shutdown has affected their communities and how an economic shutdown would be even worse. In the afternoon, the President will award William Swenson, a former active duty Army Captain, the Medal of Honor for conspicuous gallantry. Captain Swenson will receive the Medal of Honor for his courageous actions while serving as an Embedded Trainer and Mentor of the Afghan National Security Forces with Afghan Border Police Mentor Team, 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, during combat operations in Kunar Province, Afghanistan on September 8, 2009. President Obama Visits Martha’s Table to Thank Furloughed Workers

On Monday, the President traveled to Martha’s Table, a local food pantry, to thank the many furloughed federal employees who have spent time during the government shutdown volunteering for charities and non-profits. While there, he joined volunteers and helped prepare food for the pantry and called on Congress to set aside their partisan demands and let these furloughed employees return to work.
